MBBS Exam Pattern and Paper Format

MBBS theory papers in India follow the National Medical Commission (NMC) Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum. While universities may have minor structural variations, the general format across all seven target universities is consistent.

Written theory + practical/clinical assessment

NMC CBME shifted MBBS assessment toward competency-based outcomes. This means questions increasingly test application and reasoning, not just recall. When practising with previous year papers, pay attention to how questions are framed, not just what topic they cover.

For subject-specific mark breakdowns and question counts, refer to your university's official question paper pattern notification or open the university-specific listing pages linked in the tables above.

Most-Repeated Topics in MBBS Question Papers

The topic-frequency data below is based on pattern analysis of papers from 2021 to 2025. Open the GeckoMed app for subject-level breakdown and year-by-year comparison.

How to Use MBBS Question Papers Effectively

Previous year papers are the single most reliable guide to what your university actually examines. Here is how to get the most out of them.

  • Start with five-year coverage. Work through papers from 2021 to 2025 for your subject. Topics that appear in three or more years are high-priority revision targets.
  • Time yourself. Sit a full 3-hour paper under exam conditions at least once before your university exams. It exposes gaps in speed and depth that revision alone does not reveal.
  • Answer in the format the paper demands. LAQs require structured answers with headings, diagrams, and clinical correlations. SAQs need to be concise but complete. Practise both formats separately.
  • Cross-reference with notes. After attempting a question, check your answer against subject notes. For 1st year topics, use Anatomy Notes, Physiology Notes, or Biochemistry Notes to close gaps quickly.
  • Compare across universities. If your university has limited papers for a subject, compare paper patterns from RGUHS or KNRUHS. Topic overlap across universities is high, making cross-university practice genuinely useful.
  • Track what you skip. Make a list of questions you skip during practice. Those are your exam-day risks. Revisit them in a separate session.
  • Pair papers with viva prep. For practical-heavy subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, and Pathology, practise PYQs alongside viva questions to cover both written and clinical assessment in the same revision block.
