MBBS Exam Pattern Explained

MBBS university examinations in India follow the NMC Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework. Each subject is assessed through separate theory and practical examinations. The general structure of a theory paper across most affiliated universities is:

Component

Long Essay Questions (LEQ)

Description

Two to three questions testing in-depth understanding of major topics

Component

Short Essay Questions (SEQ)

Description

Five to seven questions covering a broader range of the syllabus

Component

Short Answer Questions (SAQ)

Description

Ten or more questions testing definitions, mechanisms, and clinical correlations

Component

Diagram / Applied

Description

Labelled diagrams, case-based or applied questions (subject-dependent)

The passing criteria, marks distribution, and total marks per paper vary by university. Reviewing the PYQs for your specific university is the most reliable way to understand the format and question style you will face.

How to Use MBBS Previous Year Question Papers

PYQs are the most efficient revision tool available to an MBBS student preparing for a university examination. Used well, they answer three questions that a textbook alone cannot: which topics are actually examined, how deep the expected answer needs to be, and which questions repeat across years.

  • Start with your university's own papers. Question style, marks allocation, and topic weighting differ between universities. Even if the syllabus is similar, RGUHS papers look different from KNRUHS papers, and TNMGRMU papers have their own question patterns. Always prioritise your university's archive.
  • Work through at least three years before your exam. A single year's paper can be misleading. Looking across three or more years reveals which topics appear reliably and which appeared only once. Topics that appear in four or five of the last five papers are high-yield and should be revised thoroughly.
  • Use papers to calibrate answer depth. A two-mark Short Answer Question on a topic requires a different answer from a ten-mark Long Essay Question on the same topic. Reviewing how the same topic has been asked at different mark allocations across years trains you to write to the right level.
  • Attempt under timed conditions. Sitting a full paper in three hours before your exam, without notes, is one of the most effective ways to identify gaps and practise managing time across question types.
  • Cross-reference with notes for weak areas. After attempting a paper, check the questions you struggled with against the GeckoMed notes for that subject. This converts PYQ practice into targeted revision rather than passive reading.

Are MBBS question papers the same across all universities?

No. Each university sets its own papers, and question style, format, topic weighting, and marks distribution differ between them. Even when the NMC CBME syllabus is shared, the way questions are framed and the depth of answer expected varies significantly. Students are always best served by studying their own university's papers first.
