RGUHS OBG Exam Pattern

RGUHS Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a 100-mark theory paper examined in the Phase 3 Part 2 (Final Year) professional examination under the NMC CBME format. The paper duration is 3 hours. It is a combined paper covering both obstetrics and gynaecology — questions from both disciplines appear in the same paper and are not split into separate sections.

The paper follows the NMC CBME structure of long essay questions (LEQ), short essay questions (SEQ), and short answer questions (SAQ). LEQs test applied clinical management of a specific obstetric emergency or gynaecological condition in depth. SEQs cover a broader range of topics. SAQs test factual recall — drug names and doses, scoring systems, classification criteria, and clinical signs. The specific mark allocation and question count for each section are visible in the full papers above.

RGUHS OBG also has a separate clinical practical examination. This includes a long-case clinical assessment with an obstetric or gynaecological patient, instrument identification (obstetric forceps, vacuum cup, IUCD types, specula), and a viva conducted by the external examiner.

Study Tips for RGUHS OBG

Revise obstetric emergencies as management algorithms. The highest-yield LEQ topics in RGUHS OBG — preeclampsia, antepartum haemorrhage, and postpartum haemorrhage — are best revised as step-by-step management sequences rather than descriptive paragraphs. Examiners award marks for each management step in order. Practise writing these as numbered protocols rather than prose.

Separate placenta praevia and abruptio placentae clearly. These two causes of antepartum haemorrhage are frequently asked as a comparison or differentiation question in RGUHS OBG short essays. Revise them side by side as a table — site of bleeding, presentation, pain, uterine tone, fetal position, examination, management. Students who confuse the two in the exam lose marks on both sides of the question.

Learn drug doses for obstetric emergencies. RGUHS OBG short answer questions regularly ask for the dose, route, and monitoring parameters of magnesium sulphate in eclampsia, oxytocin and ergometrine in PPH, and misoprostol dosing. The MBBS Drug Dosing Reference covers these drugs with the exam-level framing needed to answer SAQs accurately.

Gynaecology papers reward classification knowledge. The FIGO staging system for carcinoma cervix and endometrium, the PALM-COEIN classification for AUB, and the FIGO fibroid classification by site all appear as direct short-answer questions. These are learnable data sets — spending 30 minutes on each classification pays dividends across multiple question types in the same paper.

Use the viva page for applied exam prep. The RGUHS OBG viva questions page covers instrument identification and clinical scenario questions alongside theory — the same material that appears in OBG SAQs but in the format examiners actually use. Revising from the viva page in the final week before the practical sharpens both written and viva performance.

Do both obstetrics and gynaecology in the same revision session. OBG is examined as a single combined paper. Students who revise obstetrics and gynaecology in separate blocks often run short on gynaecology preparation. A 70-30 split (obstetrics-gynaecology) by time, revised in alternating sessions, prevents this imbalance.
