Physiology for MBBS: Notes, PYQs and Viva

Physiology is studied in MBBS 1st Year (Phase 1) and covers the functions and mechanisms of every organ system in the human body. It is one of the three foundation subjects examined at the end of Phase 1, alongside Anatomy and Biochemistry. GeckoMed brings together previous year question papers (PYQs) from seven universities, structured notes, viva questions, and important questions for Physiology in one place.

What Is Physiology in MBBS?

Physiology is the study of how the human body functions: the mechanisms by which organ systems maintain homeostasis, respond to stimuli, and regulate their own activity. In the NMC Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework, Physiology is taught throughout 1st Year and forms the functional counterpart to Anatomy, giving students the mechanistic understanding needed to reason through disease processes in every clinical subject that follows.

The subject is divided into general physiology and systemic physiology. General physiology covers cell biology, membrane transport, and nerve and muscle physiology. Systemic physiology covers the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, renal system, gastrointestinal system, endocrine system, reproductive physiology, and the special senses. Neurophysiology and higher nervous functions are also covered, including the autonomic nervous system, sleep, and higher cortical functions.

Topics that appear repeatedly across Indian university Physiology papers include the cardiac cycle and its pressure-volume relationships, the electrocardiogram (ECG), respiratory volumes and capacities, renal regulation of water and electrolytes (including the countercurrent mechanism), control of blood pressure, nerve conduction and synaptic transmission, muscle contraction mechanisms, endocrine regulation (particularly thyroid, adrenal, and pancreatic physiology), and reproductive hormones. Haemostasis and blood group physiology also appear frequently in short-answer questions.

GeckoMed's Physiology resources are organised to match this exam pattern: PYQs are archived by university and year, notes are structured for targeted revision, and viva questions reflect the practical examination format including applied physiology scenarios.

Important Questions

Physiology important questions identify the topics that have appeared most consistently across university papers. These are especially useful in the final weeks of revision before a Phase 1 examination.

Physiology Notes and Study Material

GeckoMed's Physiology notes are written for MBBS 1st Year university exam preparation, covering the systems and mechanisms that appear most often in papers across Indian universities.

Physiology Viva Questions

Physiology has a practical component examined by most Indian medical universities. Viva questions are asked on experimental physiology, applied physiology scenarios, graphs and tracings (including ECG interpretation), and clinical correlations of organ system physiology.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most important topics in Physiology for MBBS university exams?

Topics that appear most consistently across university Physiology papers include the cardiac cycle (including pressure-volume diagrams and heart sounds), the ECG and its interpretation, respiratory volumes and lung compliance, renal physiology (including the countercurrent mechanism and tubular function), blood pressure regulation, nerve and muscle physiology (action potential, neuromuscular junction, muscle contraction), endocrine physiology (thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, reproductive hormones), and haemostasis. Applied questions linking physiology to clinical scenarios are increasingly common under the NMC CBME pattern.

How many papers does Physiology have in MBBS?

Physiology is examined at the end of MBBS 1st Year (Phase 1). The examination structure — number of theory papers, practical assessment format, and marks distribution — varies by university. Reviewing the PYQs and syllabus page for your specific university on GeckoMed gives the most accurate picture of what to expect.

Are Physiology question papers the same across all universities?

No. Each university sets its own Physiology papers with its own question style, format, and topic emphasis. RGUHS, KNRUHS, and TNMGRMU (Tier-1) have the deepest PYQ archives on GeckoMed, covering 2025 back to 2021. Studying your own university's papers first is always the most efficient preparation strategy.

Is Physiology harder than Anatomy in MBBS 1st Year?

Students find the two subjects differently challenging. Anatomy requires memorising a large volume of structural detail, while Physiology demands conceptual understanding of mechanisms and their clinical applications. Students who approach Physiology by understanding the "why" behind each mechanism — rather than memorising facts in isolation — tend to find both the theory examination and the viva more manageable.
