KNRUHS Physiology is a 100-mark theory paper examined in the Phase 1 (1st Year) professional examination under the NMC CBME format. The paper duration is 3 hours. It is written alongside Anatomy and Biochemistry in the 1st Year professional examination.
The paper follows the NMC CBME structure of long essay questions (LEQ), short essay questions (SEQ), and short answer questions (SAQ). Physiology LEQs often integrate multiple systems — a question on cardiac output may extend to cover regulation of blood pressure, or a question on renal physiology may include hormonal control of fluid balance. SEQs cover discrete physiological mechanisms at intermediate depth. SAQs test quantitative recall — normal values, curve shifts, measurement parameters, and classification of physiological responses. The specific mark allocation and question count are visible in the full papers above.
KNRUHS Physiology also has a separate practical examination covering haematology experiments (blood grouping, haemoglobin estimation, differential count), cardiovascular experiments (blood pressure measurement, pulse recording), and nerve-muscle physiology, with a viva component.
The following topic areas recur across KNRUHS Physiology papers from 2021 to 2025. Frequency classification is based on review of papers in the GeckoMed archive.

Revise Physiology by system, not by chapter. Each physiological system — cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, neurophysiology — is a self-contained question domain in the KNRUHS paper. Revising in system blocks ensures you can answer both LEQs (which go deep into one system) and SEQs (which can pull from any system) without gaps.
Graphs and curves earn marks that prose alone cannot. KNRUHS Physiology papers consistently reward diagram-quality answers. The oxygen-haemoglobin dissociation curve with right and left shift conditions labelled, the cardiac action potential with phases annotated, the Frank-Starling curve with preload and afterload effects — each of these as a well-labelled diagram converts a good answer into a high-scoring one. Practise drawing the 8 to 10 most commonly examined curves during revision.
Normal values are tested directly as SAQs. Know your Physiology numbers: normal GFR, normal blood pressure, FVC and FEV1 reference ranges, normal haemoglobin by sex, normal cardiac output at rest. These appear in KNRUHS SAQs and in the practical viva. The normal lab values chart covers haematological and biochemical normal ranges useful alongside Physiology revision.
The cardiac cycle is the highest-yield single topic. It bridges cardiovascular Physiology with ECG, heart sounds, and pressure-volume relationships — all of which can appear in the same LEQ. Revise the cardiac cycle as one integrated topic covering the phase sequence, pressure events, valve movements, and corresponding ECG and heart sound correlates. The cardiac cycle topic guide structures this exactly.
Practical viva preparation doubles as theory revision. The three GeckoMed Physiology viva pages — general viva questions, 1st Year targeted questions, and practical viva questions — cover the applied and experimental angles of topics that also appear in the theory paper. Revising from these in the final week before the practical reinforces both viva and written performance simultaneously.

Yes. KNRUHS conducts Physiology examinations under the NMC Competency Based Medical Education framework. The paper includes long essay questions, short essay questions, and short answer questions covering all organ systems — cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, neurophysiology, and muscle — as per the Phase 1 CBME syllabus.
Yes. The KNRUHS Physiology assessment includes a 100-mark theory paper and a separate practical examination. The practical covers haematology experiments (blood grouping, haemoglobin estimation, differential count), cardiovascular experiments, and nerve-muscle physiology, with a viva. GeckoMed's physiology practical viva questions page covers the most commonly asked viva questions in the practical examination.
Based on analysis of KNRUHS Physiology papers from 2021 to 2025, the cardiac cycle — including its relationship to ECG, heart sounds, and pressure-volume changes — is the most consistently tested and most diagram-heavy topic. Lung volumes and capacities, the oxygen-haemoglobin dissociation curve, and nerve action potential are also core topics that appear across multiple paper years.
Yes. The NMC CBME framework sets a common Physiology syllabus for all Indian medical universities. Topics recurring in KNRUHS papers — cardiac cycle, lung volumes, GFR, nerve action potential — appear at RGUHS, TNMGRMU, and other universities. Students at other universities should also review their own university's papers alongside the KNRUHS archive.
