NTRUHS Physiology Exam Pattern

NTRUHS conducts Phase 1 MBBS examinations under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework. The table below reflects the standard structure for NTRUHS Physiology theory examinations. Mark allocation: The NTRUHS Physiology theory paper follows the NMC CBME format with Long Essay Questions carrying 10 marks each and Short Answer Questions carrying five marks each. Verify the exact question count for the current year from the official NTRUHS exam notification.

Practical and viva: The practical examination covers experiments in haematology (blood grouping, haemoglobin estimation, RBC/WBC counts), nerve-muscle physiology, and clinical physiology recordings such as spirometry. Viva questions in practicals focus on the physiology underlying each experiment. See Physiology Viva Questions and Answers and 1st Year MBBS Physiology Viva Questions for dedicated viva preparation.

How to Study NTRUHS Physiology With PYQs

Physiology at the NTRUHS 1st year level rewards students who understand mechanisms over those who memorise isolated facts. These tips are specific to how the paper is structured and how examiners at NTRUHS frame questions.

  • Understand before you memorise. Physiology questions often ask you to explain a mechanism or justify a physiological response. A student who understands why blood pressure rises in response to haemorrhage will answer that question better than one who has memorised a list of responses without knowing the connections.
  • Flowcharts are your most valuable revision tool. The cardiovascular, renal, and endocrine regulatory loops all connect. Drawing these as flowcharts -- baroreceptor reflex, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, osmoregulation -- will help you retain mechanisms and reproduce them quickly under exam conditions.
  • Diagrams earn marks in Physiology too. Action potential, cardiac cycle, ECG, oxygen dissociation curve, and spirometry traces are all fair game as diagram questions. Practice drawing each one from memory with correct axes, labels, and key features marked.
  • Applied questions carry weight. NTRUHS Physiology papers at the university level routinely test applied physiology: what happens to GFR in dehydration, how cardiac output changes during exercise, why ventilation-perfusion mismatch causes hypoxia. For each system, prepare at least two clinical application scenarios.
  • Know your normal values. Certain numerical values are frequently asked in short answer questions: normal GFR, cardiac output at rest, tidal volume, FEV1/FVC ratio, haemoglobin concentration. Memorise these as a short list and know the clinical significance of deviations from normal.
  • Work through all four paper years, system by system. Rather than solving a complete paper from one year, try working through all four years' questions for cardiovascular physiology together, then respiratory, then renal. This gives you a topic-level view of what reappears and what doesn't.
  • Physiology practicals and theory reinforce each other. Understanding why you perform haemoglobin estimation a certain way is the same knowledge that answers a short answer theory question about haemoglobin. Link your practical work to the theory paper -- it reduces total revision load significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are NTRUHS Physiology question papers free on GeckoMed?

Yes. All NTRUHS Physiology papers in the GeckoMed collection are free to access. The app offers a four-day free trial with full access, followed by an annual subscription at INR 500.

How many theory papers does NTRUHS conduct for Physiology?

NTRUHS conducts one Physiology theory paper as part of the Phase 1 / 1st Year MBBS university examination. The paper is 100 marks and three hours in duration. The practical examination is a separate assessment covering haematology experiments, nerve-muscle recordings, and clinical physiology. Verify the current structure from the official NTRUHS exam notification.

Which Physiology topics appear most often in NTRUHS papers?

Topics from cardiovascular physiology (cardiac output, blood pressure regulation, ECG), renal physiology (GFR, countercurrent mechanism), and nerve-muscle physiology (action potential, neuromuscular junction) feature consistently across NTRUHS Physiology papers. The GeckoMed app provides a year-wise topic frequency breakdown based on analysis of papers from 2021 to 2025.
