RGUHS Paediatrics is a 100-mark theory paper examined in the Phase 3 Part 2 (Final Year) professional examination under the NMC CBME format. The paper duration is 3 hours. It is written in the same sitting as General Medicine, General Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The paper follows the NMC CBME structure of long essay questions (LEQ), short essay questions (SEQ), and short answer questions (SAQ). LEQs test depth of clinical knowledge — neonatal jaundice management, nutritional management in PEM, congenital heart disease — in a case-integrated format. SEQs cover a broader range of paediatric topics at intermediate depth. SAQs test data-set recall: immunisation ages and routes, dehydration grading criteria, developmental milestone timelines, and classification systems.
The RGUHS Paediatrics clinical practical examination includes a clinical case assessment with a paediatric patient, growth chart interpretation, developmental milestone assessment, and a viva. The viva commonly asks for the APGAR score components, the IAP immunisation schedule by age, dehydration assessment criteria, and the Jones criteria for acute rheumatic fever.
The following topic areas recur across RGUHS Paediatrics papers from 2021 to 2025. Frequency classification is based on review of papers in the GeckoMed archive.

Note: Frequency data is based on GeckoMed's analysis of RGUHS Paediatrics papers from 2021 to 2025. Full question paper content is available in the papers above.
Memorise the immunisation schedules before anything else. Both the IAP and UIP schedules are tested in RGUHS Paediatrics as direct short answer questions and in the viva. They are pure data — vaccine name, age, route, dose, site — and cannot be reasoned through if not memorised. Spend the first revision session on the IAP schedule and national immunisation schedule, then layer the rest of the syllabus around them.
Neonatal jaundice is worth disproportionate revision time. It is the most reliably tested topic in RGUHS Paediatrics across the archive. It is also multi-component — physiological versus pathological criteria, bilirubin threshold tables for phototherapy and exchange transfusion by gestational age and postnatal day, causes of pathological jaundice, kernicterus. Each component can be a separate SAQ. Revising all sub-components as a single intensive session ensures no marks are left on the table.
Know the APGAR score cold. The five components, their scoring criteria (0, 1, 2 for each), the total score interpretation, and the resuscitation decision thresholds are asked directly in SAQs and in the viva. Students who hesitate on this in the practical examination signal inadequate preparation for the examiners before any other question is asked.
Learn PEM as a comparison, not two separate topics. Marasmus and kwashiorkor are almost always asked as a differentiation question in RGUHS papers — clinical features, biochemistry, oedema, hair changes, skin changes, management differences. Revising them side by side as a comparison table rather than as separate chapters saves time and produces better exam answers.
Pair acute diarrhoea with dehydration assessment. The IMNCI dehydration classification (no dehydration, some dehydration, severe dehydration) and its clinical signs, ORS composition, plan A/B/C management, and IV fluid regimen for severe dehydration form a single integrated clinical topic. RGUHS SAQs and LEQs both draw from different parts of this cluster — revising them as one unit rather than separate items prevents gaps.
Use the normal lab values chart for paediatric reference ranges. Several RGUHS Paediatrics SAQs require normal values — haemoglobin by age, normal heart rate and respiratory rate for different paediatric age groups. The normal lab values chart provides these reference ranges in a format optimised for pre-exam recall.

Yes. RGUHS conducts Paediatrics examinations under the NMC Competency Based Medical Education framework. The paper includes long essay questions, short essay questions, and short answer questions as per the CBME format for Final Year subjects.
Immunisation is a core component of the NMC CBME Paediatrics syllabus. Both the IAP recommended schedule and the Government of India Universal Immunisation Programme are included because MBBS graduates are expected to counsel families on immunisation, administer vaccines, and manage adverse effects. The schedules appear in both written SAQs and in the Paediatrics viva as direct recall questions.
Yes. The RGUHS Paediatrics assessment includes a 100-mark theory paper and a separately scheduled clinical practical examination. The practical includes a clinical case examination with a paediatric patient, growth chart interpretation, developmental milestone assessment, and a viva. Both components must be cleared to pass Paediatrics.
Yes. The NMC CBME framework sets a common Paediatrics syllabus across all Indian medical universities. Topics recurring in RGUHS papers — neonatal jaundice, APGAR, immunisation schedules, PEM, congenital heart disease — appear at KNRUHS, TNMGRMU, and other universities. Students at other universities should also review their own university's papers alongside the RGUHS archive.
