Question types: Long essay questions require a structured clinical response covering definition, classification, clinical features, investigations, and management. Paediatrics papers frequently test neonatal conditions and immunisation in LEQs. Short essay questions and short answer questions test individual topics such as developmental milestones, specific diseases, and nutritional conditions, requiring concise, marks-focused answers.

Verify the current examination pattern with your department or TNMGRMU's official circulars before your exam.

Study Tips for TNMGRMU Paediatrics

Paediatrics is the most age-specific subject in the Final Year syllabus, and TNMGRMU papers reward students who can integrate growth, development, immunity, and clinical management as a connected system rather than isolated topics. Here are seven strategies for this paper.

  • Learn developmental milestones as a single master table. Gross motor, fine motor, language, and social milestones from birth to five years appear almost every year as an LEQ or SEQ. Build one comprehensive table and reproduce it from memory until it is automatic.
  • Memorise the national immunisation schedule in full. Both the National Immunisation Schedule (NIS) and the IAP schedule are high-yield topics. Use the National Immunisation Schedule reference page and the IAP Immunisation Schedule reference page on GeckoMed to revise both and understand where they differ.
  • Write neonatal emergencies as stepwise management protocols. Birth asphyxia, neonatal jaundice, neonatal sepsis, and respiratory distress syndrome are LEQ-level topics. For each, practise writing an answer that covers definition, risk factors, clinical features, investigations, and management in full rather than listing points in isolation.
  • Draw congenital heart disease diagrams from memory. Ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and Tetralogy of Fallot are the four most tested CHD conditions. Practise labelled diagrams showing the anatomical defect, clinical features, and haemodynamic consequence for each.
  • Know the WHO criteria for severity grading of common conditions. WHO grading for pneumonia severity, dehydration assessment in acute diarrhoeal disease, and severe acute malnutrition criteria (using MUAC and weight-for-height) are tested as short answer questions and as part of management LEQs.
  • Use the neonatal jaundice bilirubin chart as a rapid-revision reference. Phototherapy and exchange transfusion thresholds, and causes of pathological jaundice, are all testable as SAQs. Visual reference tools are faster to revise in this topic than prose notes.
  • Revise acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and Jones criteria before your exam. ARF, its cardiac sequelae, and long-term penicillin prophylaxis are recurring short-note topics. The Jones criteria (major and minor) and the Duckett Jones revision need to be reproducible from memory for SEQ answers.
