Long Essay Questions (LEQs), Short Essay Questions (SEQs), Short Answer Questions (SAQs)

What each question type expects:

  • Long Essay Questions (LEQs) in General Medicine cover a condition in full clinical depth: definition, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, investigations (with interpretation of relevant lab values, ECG findings, or imaging), differential diagnosis, and management including emergency protocols where applicable. Case vignettes may be used as LEQ stems in the NMC CBME format.
  • Short Essay Questions (SEQs) focus on one component -- the management of a named condition, the classification of a disease group, the interpretation of a specific investigation, or the complications of a condition or treatment.
  • Short Answer Questions (SAQs) test rapid recall: diagnostic criteria (Jones criteria, Wells score), named signs, drug doses, classification systems, or a brief list of causes for a named clinical presentation.

Verify the exact mark split per question type by opening the paper in the GeckoMed app or viewing the year-specific page linked in the table above.

Paper strategy

How to Use These Papers

  1. 1.Apply a standard clinical answer structure to every LEQ. General Medicine covers too much to memorise every topic in isolation. The most efficient approach is to apply one consistent structure to all conditions: aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, investigations, and management. Once this format is automatic, you can answer a question on any system without rebuilding your approach from scratch each time.
  2. 2.Prioritise emergency management answers. TNMGRMU General Medicine papers regularly include questions on the acute management of high-stakes conditions -- diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), acute severe asthma, STEMI, hypertensive emergency, acute meningitis, and status epilepticus. These answers require knowing specific drug names, doses, routes, and sequences. Revise each as a step-by-step management protocol rather than a narrative paragraph.
  3. 3.Know investigation findings, not just investigation names. General Medicine LEQs and SEQs award marks for interpreting findings -- the ECG changes in STEMI, the peripheral blood smear in iron deficiency anaemia, the chest X-ray findings in heart failure, the pleural fluid analysis in transudates vs exudates. Use normal lab values as a baseline reference and learn the specific abnormalities for each high-frequency condition.
  4. 4.Revise tuberculosis as a standalone block. TB questions in TNMGRMU papers span diagnosis (Mantoux, CBNAAT, bronchoscopy), treatment regimens (DOTS, first-line and second-line agents, drug resistance), and complications (pleural effusion, Pott's disease, miliary TB). It is one of the most consistently examined topics and rewards thorough revision across all its question angles.
  5. 5.Build a causes list for the most common clinical presentations. SAQs in General Medicine frequently ask for a list -- causes of hepatomegaly, causes of haemoptysis, causes of secondary hypertension, causes of polyneuropathy. Scanning five years of PYQs for SAQ patterns and building a causes-list bank takes about two hours and covers the majority of what appears at that level in the exam.
  6. 6.Treat infectious diseases as a cluster. Malaria, dengue, typhoid, leptospirosis, and HIV share structural similarities in how they are questioned -- organism, transmission, clinical stages, diagnosis, and treatment. Revising them as a cluster in one session rather than separately saves time and reduces the risk of mixing up details across conditions.
  7. 7.Use PYQs to map which systems are over- and under-represented. In most TNMGRMU General Medicine papers, cardiovascular and infectious disease topics dominate LEQs. Scanning the 2021 to 2025 papers shows which system-level topics have been under-asked in recent years, helping you identify relatively higher-probability topics for your sitting.

Which topics are most important for the TNMGRMU General Medicine exam?

Based on analysis of TNMGRMU General Medicine papers from 2021 to 2025, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Tuberculosis, Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Anaemia, and Stroke appear with high frequency. The GeckoMed app has a full topic-wise breakdown by year.

Are TNMGRMU General Medicine papers different from RGUHS or KNRUHS papers?

The core syllabus follows the NMC CBME framework across all Indian medical universities, so topic overlap is substantial.
