Question types: Long essay questions require a structured clinical response covering definition, classification, pathophysiology, clinical features, investigations, and management. Diagram-labelling is regularly included in OBG papers, particularly for fetal presentations, mechanism of labour, and types of placenta praevia. Short essay questions and short answer questions test individual Obstetrics and Gynaecology topics in concise, focused responses.

Verify the current examination pattern with your department or TNMGRMU's official circulars before your exam.

Study Tips for TNMGRMU Obstetrics & Gynaecology

OBG is a broad Final Year subject that tests both clinical reasoning and applied pharmacology. Here are seven strategies specific to the TNMGRMU paper.

  • Split revision equally between Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Both sections contribute LEQ and SEQ questions. Ensure you have at least five high-frequency conditions fully revised from each section before your exam, rather than loading one section at the expense of the other.
  • Master obstetric emergencies with stepwise management. Antepartum haemorrhage, postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, and ectopic pregnancy are perennial high-yield LEQ topics. For each, practise writing a structured emergency management protocol, not just the clinical features.
  • Practise OBG diagrams under timed conditions. TNMGRMU papers regularly include marks for labelled diagrams. Priority diagrams include the mechanism of normal labour (cardinal movements), fetal presentations and positions, types of placenta praevia, and the anatomy of the female pelvis. Practise drawing and labelling each from memory.
  • Learn FIGO staging for gynaecological malignancies as a table. Carcinoma cervix, carcinoma endometrium, and ovarian carcinoma each have their own FIGO staging system. These appear frequently as short notes. Write out each staging table until you can reproduce it without prompts.
  • Know the pharmacology of obstetrics cold. Oxytocics (oxytocin, ergometrine, carboprost, misoprostol), tocolytics (nifedipine, ritodrine), antihypertensives in pregnancy (labetalol, nifedipine, hydralazine), and the magnesium sulphate protocol for eclampsia are regularly tested in SAQs.
  • Use the OBG viva questions page as a short-note checklist. If you can give a clear viva answer to each OBG topic, you are also ready to write a structured SAQ on it. Viva prep and theory prep for OBG overlap significantly.
  • Revise contraception and family planning before your exam. Contraceptive methods, hormonal pharmacology, and family planning counselling are recurring SAQ and short note topics that are easy marks if revised systematically in the final week.
