MBBS 1st Year Exam Pattern (National, NMC CBME)

Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry follow the same national structure under the NMC Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum:

  • Theory: Two papers of 100 marks each, 3 hours per paper
  • Practical: 100 marks, covering specimens, spotters, and experimental or lab-based work depending on the subject
  • Viva Voce: Conducted alongside the practical examination
  • Internal Assessment: Recorded by the college through the year, separate from the university theory and practical marks

This structure is consistent across the universities GeckoMed tracks in depth, since it is set nationally by NMC rather than by individual universities.

Most Repeated Topics in 1st Year Papers

Based on analysis of 1st Year papers from 2025 back to 2021:

  • Anatomy: Upper limb anatomy, brachial plexus, and nerve supply — asked in four of the last five years
  • Physiology: Cardiac cycle, action potential, and cardiovascular regulation — asked in five of the last five years
  • Biochemistry: Carbohydrate metabolism, the Krebs cycle, and glycolysis — asked in four of the last five years

How to Use These Papers

  1. Start with the 2025 and 2024 papers, since they reflect the current CBME question style most closely.
  2. Attempt a full paper under timed, three-hour conditions before checking your notes, so you get an honest measure of your readiness.
  3. Track which topics repeat across two or more years within each subject and prioritise those in revision.
  4. Practise diagrams separately under time pressure, since diagram-based questions are common in Anatomy and Biochemistry and are an easy place to lose marks if you haven't practised drawing them quickly.
  5. Once you've worked through the papers, use the MBBS 1st Year Question Papers with Answers page to check selected solved answers where available.
