MBBS 1st Year Exam Pattern (National, NMC CBME)

Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry each follow the same national structure under the NMC Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum:

  • Theory: Two papers of 100 marks each, 3 hours per paper
  • Practical: 100 marks, covering specimens, spotters, and lab or experimental work depending on the subject
  • Viva Voce: Conducted alongside the practical examination
  • Internal Assessment: Recorded by the college through the year, in addition to the university exam

This pattern is consistent across the universities GeckoMed tracks, since it is set by NMC regulation rather than by individual universities.

Most Repeated Topics in MBBS 1st Year Papers

Based on analysis of 1st Year papers from the universities GeckoMed tracks in depth:

  • Anatomy: Upper limb anatomy, brachial plexus, and nerve supply — asked in four of the last five years
  • Physiology: Cardiac cycle, action potential, and cardiovascular regulation — asked in five of the last five years
  • Biochemistry: Carbohydrate metabolism, the Krebs cycle, and glycolysis — asked in four of the last five years

Reviewing the answer for each of these topics across multiple years, rather than a single paper, gives a more complete picture of what examiners expect.

How to Use Papers with Answers Effectively

  1. Attempt the question first, under timed conditions, before checking the provided answer. Reading a solved answer without first attempting the question yourself does not build exam writing speed.
  2. Compare your own answer structure against the solved answer for gaps in sequencing, not just missing facts. Examiners mark structured answers, not just correct content.
  3. Use solved answers to check diagram labelling and layout, since diagrams are a common place students lose marks even when the underlying knowledge is correct.
  4. For papers without a solution set yet, cross-check your answer against your subject notes and discuss with faculty or seniors rather than waiting for a solution to appear.
  5. Revise the same topic across two or more years' papers so your answer covers the full range of what has been asked, not just one paper's version of the question.
