Practical and Clinical Examination

The RGUHS ENT practical examination includes clinical case examination, instrument identification, and viva voce. Students are assessed on their ability to examine the ear (otoscopy), nose, and throat, interpret audiological findings, and discuss clinical management at the MBBS level.

Internal Assessment

Internal assessment in ENT is continuous throughout the academic year and contributes to the final pass criteria as per RGUHS and NMC CBME norms. Minimum attendance across theory and practical sessions is mandatory.

How to Prepare for RGUHS ENT Exams

ENT is a compact subject but rewards students who understand the clinical examination and surgical anatomy. Here is how to use these papers effectively:

  • Cover CSOM in depth first. The tubo-tympanic vs attico-antral distinction, complications of CSOM, and surgical management (tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy) are among the highest-yield ENT topics in RGUHS papers and are likely to appear as LAQs.
  • Know your tuning fork tests and audiogram interpretation. Rinne, Weber, and Absolute Bone Conduction (ABC) tests appear frequently as short-answer topics. Be clear on what each result pattern indicates for conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing loss.
  • Learn anatomy as a clinical tool. ENT questions often integrate anatomy with clinical presentation. Knowing the anatomy of the lateral wall of the nose (for epistaxis and DNS), the middle ear (for CSOM and cholesteatoma), and the larynx (for carcinoma and tracheostomy) pays off across multiple questions.
  • Prepare surgical short notes. Tonsillectomy indications and contraindications, septoplasty vs submucous resection (SMR), and tracheostomy (types, indications, complications) are standalone short-note favourites in RGUHS ENT.
  • Use all four years of papers as timed practice. ENT papers are shorter in breadth than subjects like Pharmacology or Pathology. Completing one full paper under timed conditions, then reviewing your answers against clinical notes, is the most efficient final revision method.
  • Check diagrams. ENT practicals and theory both test diagram-based knowledge: tympanic membrane anatomy, audiogram curves, and nasal anatomy diagrams are regularly examined.
