ENT Exam Pattern at RUHS

RUHS follows the NMC CBME framework for Phase 3 Part 1 subjects. Exact theory-practical-viva marks split, paper duration, and internal assessment weightage for ENT at RUHS are being confirmed with our subject matter experts and will be added here. In general, ENT at this stage combines a theory paper with a clinical practical and viva component, testing both applied anatomy of the ear, nose and throat and common clinical conditions.

Most Repeated Topics in ENT (RUHS)

In RUHS (Rajasthan University of Health Sciences) and similar medical university theory papers, ENT exams heavily emphasize high-yield, clinically relevant topics. The most frequently repeated topics consistently fall into clear categories spanning otology, rhinology, and laryngology.

1. Otology (Ear)

  • CSOM (Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media): The absolute most repeated topic. You must know the difference between safe (mucosal) and unsafe (squamosal) types, complications, and management.
  • Otosclerosis: Pathology, clinical features, Carhart’s notch on audiometry, and stapedectomy.
  • Ménière's Disease: Triad of symptoms (vertigo, tinnitus, fluctuating hearing loss), investigations, and medical/surgical management.
  • Complications of CSOM: Both intracranial (e.g., brain abscess, meningitis) and extracranial (e.g., facial nerve palsy, labyrinthitis).
  • Hearing Tests: Interpretation of tuning fork tests (Rinne, Weber, Absolute Bone Conduction) and audiometric findings.

2. Rhinology (Nose & Paranasal sinuses)

  • Epistaxis: Causes (Little’s area), types, and detailed first-aid and surgical management.
  • Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS): Clinical features, indications for surgery (Septoplasty vs. SMR), and complications.
  • Atrophic Rhinitis: Symptoms (foul smell, crusting, cacosmia) and conservative management.
  • Sinusitis & Nasal Polyps: Maxillary sinusitis, ethmoidal polyps, and complications of sinusitis.
  • Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNA): Classic presentation (benign but locally destructive, epistaxis in young males) and treatment.

3. Laryngology & Pharynx (Throat)

  • Tracheostomy: Indications, types of tubes, steps of the procedure, and post-operative complications.
  • Tonsillitis & Complications: Quinsy (peritonsillar abscess) drainage and indications for tonsillectomy.
  • Carcinoma Larynx: Hoarseness of voice, risk factors, staging, and management.
  • Space Infections: Ludwig's angina and retropharyngeal abscess (clinical features and airway management).

How to Use These Papers

  • Start with the most recent year (2025) to see the current examiner's style before moving to older papers.
  • Time yourself on the theory paper once solutions are available, rather than reading questions passively.
  • Cross-check topics against the RUHS 3rd Year syllabus so you're not revising anything outside scope.
  • Note down questions that repeat across multiple years. These deserve priority over one-off questions.
  • Pair theory revision with the viva questions for ENT once published, since RUHS often draws viva questions from the same clinical themes as the written paper.
