TNMGRMU ENT Exam Pattern

Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) is a Phase 3 Part 1 (3rd Year MBBS) subject under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum. ENT is a clinical subject that tests surgical anatomy, disease pathology, and patient management together. TNMGRMU conducts ENT as a theory paper worth 100 marks.

Question Types

Long Essay Questions (LEQs), Short Essay Questions (SEQs), Short Answer Questions (SAQs)

What each question type expects:

  • Long Essay Questions (LEQs) in ENT cover a condition in full: anatomy of the relevant structure, aetiology, classification, clinical features, investigations (including audiometric or radiological findings where relevant), differential diagnosis, and management. Surgical procedures asked at LEQ level should include indications, steps, and complications.
  • Short Essay Questions (SEQs) focus on one aspect of a condition -- the types and features of hearing loss, the management of epistaxis, the complications of chronic otitis media, or the indications for tracheostomy.
  • Short Answer Questions (SAQs) test rapid recall: anatomical landmarks (Kiesselbach's plexus, Little's area, Killian's triangle), brief definitions, named classifications, or the features that distinguish one condition from another.

Verify the exact mark split per question type by opening the paper in the GeckoMed app or viewing the year-specific page linked in the table above.

Paper strategy

How to Use These Papers

  1. 1.Learn the safe vs unsafe distinction for chronic otitis media first. Tubotympanic (safe) and atticoantral (unsafe) types of chronic otitis media (COM) are the most reliably high-yield topic in ENT across universities. Know the differences in tympanic membrane involvement, discharge character, complications, and management for both types without hesitation.
  2. 2.Understand cholesteatoma in depth. Cholesteatoma is a complication of unsafe COM and appears at both LEQ and SEQ level. Know its definition, pathogenesis, clinical features, the significance of the danger area of the middle ear, and its complications (which include intracranial spread). Questions on cholesteatoma are rarely straightforward and reward detailed answers.
  3. 3.Use audiogram features to anchor hearing loss questions. Hearing loss questions at TNMGRMU frequently ask you to describe the audiometric findings for a given type of hearing loss -- conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. Learn the characteristic pure tone audiogram patterns and tympanometry results for each type. A clearly drawn audiogram in your answer adds marks.
  4. 4.Master epistaxis as a model SAQ and SEQ topic. Epistaxis questions test surgical anatomy (Kiesselbach's plexus, Little's area), causes by site, and a step-by-step management approach. The management sequence from first aid through cauterisation to anterior and posterior nasal packing is a reliable short answer that is worth revising precisely.
  5. 5.Revise tracheostomy as a full LEQ. Tracheostomy -- its anatomy, the differences between surgical and percutaneous dilational techniques, indications, steps of the procedure, and complications including obstruction, haemorrhage, and surgical emphysema -- is a recurring LEQ topic in ENT papers across Indian medical universities. One thorough revision of the full answer structure covers you.
  6. 6.Know the tonsillectomy indications list. Chronic tonsillitis and its management is a high-frequency topic. The absolute and relative indications for tonsillectomy, the surgical technique, and post-operative complications (primary and secondary haemorrhage) together form a complete answer worth practising as a structured response.
  7. 7.Scan PYQs to identify which ear, nose, and throat sections are under-asked. ENT papers cycle through ear, nose, and throat topics across years. If the most recent paper was ear-heavy, nose and throat topics become relatively more likely in the next sitting. Using five years of PYQs to map this distribution takes under an hour and shapes your revision priority.

FAQs about MBBS Question Paper Downloads

Where can I download TNMGRMU ENT question papers from 2021 to 2025?

All TNMGRMU ENT question papers from 2021 to 2025 are available on this page and in the GeckoMed app. Download them as PDF or view each paper online through the Web View links in the table above.

Is the TNMGRMU ENT exam based on the NMC CBME format?

Yes. TNMGRMU follows the NMC CBME curriculum for all Phase 3 subjects including ENT. The theory paper includes long essay questions, short essay questions, and short answer questions as per the NMC framework.

Which topics are most important for the TNMGRMU ENT exam?

Based on analysis of TNMGRMU ENT papers from 2021 to 2025, Chronic Otitis Media, Cholesteatoma, Hearing Loss, Tonsillitis, Deviated Nasal Septum, and Epistaxis appear with high frequency. The GeckoMed app has a full topic-wise breakdown by year.

Are TNMGRMU ENT papers different from RGUHS or KNRUHS papers?

The core syllabus follows the NMC CBME framework across all Indian medical universities, so topic overlap is substantial. However, TNMGRMU sets its own question paper independently, so the phrasing, question weighting, and emphasis can differ. Practising TNMGRMU-specific papers gives you the most relevant preparation for your university exam.
