TNMGRMU Ophthalmology Exam Pattern

Ophthalmology is a Phase 3 Part 1 (3rd Year MBBS) subject under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum. It is a clinical and surgical subject that covers diseases of the eye from the lid to the retina, examination techniques, and ophthalmic procedures. TNMGRMU conducts Ophthalmology as a theory paper worth 100 marks.

Question Types

Detail

Long Essay Questions (LEQs), Short Essay Questions (SEQs), Short Answer Questions (SAQs)

What each question type expects:

  • Long Essay Questions (LEQs) in Ophthalmology cover a condition fully: anatomy of the relevant ocular structure, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, examination findings (including slit lamp, fundoscopy, or tonometry findings as relevant), investigations, and management both medical and surgical. Labelled diagrams of fundus findings or anatomical structures add marks.
  • Short Essay Questions (SEQs) narrow the scope to one aspect -- the types and staging of a condition, the surgical management alone, or the fundoscopic findings in a named disease.
  • Short Answer Questions (SAQs) test rapid recall: grading systems (WHO trachoma grading, Snellen visual acuity notation), named signs, classifications, or the key distinguishing features between two related conditions.

Verify the exact mark split per question type by opening the paper in the GeckoMed app or viewing the year-specific page linked in the table above.

Paper strategy

How to Use These Papers

  1. 1.Draw fundus diagrams for every retinal condition you revise. Ophthalmology LEQs on retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, and papilloedema regularly award marks for accurate labelled diagrams of fundoscopic findings. Practise drawing and labelling these diagrams -- disc appearance, vessel changes, exudates, haemorrhages -- until you can reproduce them cleanly under exam conditions.
  2. 2.Revise cataract as a complete surgical topic. Cataract is the most reliably high-frequency topic across all Indian medical universities. Revise the full LEQ structure: types and morphology, risk factors, clinical features, grading, phacoemulsification vs SICS (small incision cataract surgery), intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation, and complications of surgery including posterior capsule rupture and endophthalmitis.
  3. 3.Separate POAG and PACG clearly. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) are consistently asked as a comparison topic. Know the differences in mechanism, clinical presentation, intraocular pressure patterns, gonioscopy findings, visual field defects, and management. Acute congestive glaucoma (PACG) is also asked as a standalone emergency management question.
  4. 4.Learn the WHO trachoma grading by letter codes. Trachoma grading -- TF, TI, TS, TT, CO -- appears in SAQs and as a sub-part of SEQs. Each grade corresponds to a specific clinical finding and determines the component of the SAFE (Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, Environmental improvement) strategy applied. This is a short, exact piece of knowledge worth one focused revision session.
  5. 5.Master visual field defects by lesion site. A table mapping each level of the visual pathway (retina, optic nerve, chiasm, optic tract, radiation, cortex) to its characteristic field defect is one of the most efficient revision tools in Ophthalmology. These questions appear regularly as SEQs and SAQs and require you to localise the lesion from the field defect description.
  6. 6.Connect squint to amblyopia and cover testing. Squint (strabismus) questions in TNMGRMU papers span the types of squint, the cover-uncover test, the Hirschberg corneal reflex test, visual acuity testing in children, and the management of amblyopia including occlusion therapy. Revising squint and amblyopia together as one block is more efficient than treating them separately.
  7. 7.Use PYQs to identify the anterior vs posterior segment question split. TNMGRMU Ophthalmology papers typically distribute questions between anterior segment conditions (cornea, lens, glaucoma, lid) and posterior segment conditions (retina, vitreous, optic nerve). Mapping this distribution across 2021 to 2025 papers takes under an hour and helps you identify which segment has been relatively under-tested in recent years.

FAQs about MBBS Question Paper Downloads

Where can I download TNMGRMU Ophthalmology question papers from 2021 to 2025?

All TNMGRMU Ophthalmology question papers from 2021 to 2025 are available on this page and in the GeckoMed app. Download them as PDF or view each paper online through the Web View links in the table above.

Is the TNMGRMU Ophthalmology exam based on the NMC CBME format?

Yes. TNMGRMU follows the NMC CBME curriculum for all Phase 3 subjects including Ophthalmology. The theory paper includes long essay questions, short essay questions, and short answer questions as per the NMC framework.

Which topics are most important for the TNMGRMU Ophthalmology exam?

Based on analysis of TNMGRMU Ophthalmology papers from 2021 to 2025, Cataract, Glaucoma, Corneal Ulcer, Retinal Detachment, Squint, and Trachoma appear with high frequency. The GeckoMed app has a full topic-wise breakdown by year.

Are TNMGRMU Ophthalmology papers different from RGUHS or KNRUHS papers?

The core syllabus follows the NMC CBME framework across all Indian medical universities, so topic overlap is substantial. However, TNMGRMU sets its own question paper independently, so the phrasing, question weighting, and emphasis can differ. Practising TNMGRMU-specific papers gives you the most relevant preparation for your university exam.
