MBBS 3rd Year: Subjects, PYQs and Syllabus

MBBS 3rd Year is Phase 3 Part 1 of the NMC Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum, covering three subjects: Community Medicine, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), and Ophthalmology. This phase marks the transition into clinical specialties. ENT and Ophthalmology are the first two clinical subjects in the MBBS, and Community Medicine expands the public health and preventive medicine content introduced in earlier phases. GeckoMed provides previous year question papers, phase-wise syllabus, notes, and condition-specific topic pages for all three subjects across all seven target universities.

3rd Year MBBS Subjects

Phase 3 Part 1 has three paper-bearing subjects. Community Medicine runs as a full theory and practical examination. ENT and Ophthalmology each carry theory and clinical examination components, with clinical case presentations and instrument identification forming a significant part of the practical assessment.

Community Medicine

Community Medicine covers preventive and social medicine, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, occupational health, nutrition, and national health programmes and policies. It is the largest in scope of the three Phase 3 Part 1 subjects: the syllabus spans from individual health behaviour through family health, community health, and national health systems.

Community Medicine is distinctive among MBBS subjects in that its content includes national health programmes, which are updated periodically. For university exams, the question patterns are consistent: epidemiology and study designs, national programme details, biostatistics, and environmental and occupational health short notes appear with regularity across years and universities. Identifying which programmes and topics your university has favoured in recent papers is the most efficient use of PYQ time for this subject.

ENT

ENT covers diseases of the ear, nose, and throat, including otology (hearing loss, otitis media, cholesteatoma), rhinology (sinusitis, epistaxis, deviated nasal septum), and laryngology (hoarseness, pharyngitis, laryngeal conditions). It is a clinical subject: ENT practical examinations include clinical case assessments, instrument identification, and — depending on the college — live patient examination.

ENT theory papers across universities have a predictable structure. A small number of high-frequency topics appear consistently as long essay questions: otitis media (both acute and chronic suppurative), epistaxis management, cholesteatoma, and hearing loss classification and assessment. Short notes draw from a wider range of conditions, but the ENT instrument identification list (Siegle's speculum, Tuning fork tests, indirect laryngoscope) is standard practical territory at all affiliated colleges.

Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology covers diseases of the eye, including cataract, glaucoma, retinal disorders, corneal conditions, squint, and ocular trauma. Like ENT, it is a clinical subject: Ophthalmology practical examinations include case assessment, anterior and posterior segment examination technique, and equipment identification (direct and indirect ophthalmoscope, slit lamp principles, applanation tonometry).

Ophthalmology is considered by many students to be more manageable than ENT by volume, but the clinical examination component carries significant weight. Long essay questions consistently draw from cataract (types, management), glaucoma (classification, intraocular pressure), retinal detachment, and corneal ulcer. Squint is a reliable short note topic across most universities.

3rd Year MBBS Syllabus 2026

MBBS 3rd Year follows the NMC CBME syllabus for Phase 3 Part 1, which defines competencies for Community Medicine, ENT, and Ophthalmology. The CBME framework for this phase emphasises clinical reasoning alongside factual knowledge: ENT and Ophthalmology exam questions regularly present clinical scenarios and ask students to identify the condition, outline the examination findings, and describe the management approach. Community Medicine questions assess both conceptual understanding of epidemiology and applied knowledge of national public health programmes.

MBBS 3rd Year Question Papers (2025 to 2021)

Question papers for all three 3rd Year subjects are available by university below. Tier-1 universities (RGUHS, KNRUHS, TNMGRMU) have five paper years (2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021). Non-Tier-1 universities (NTRUHS, WBUHS, KUHS, RUHS) have three paper years (2025, 2024, 2023).

How to Study for MBBS 3rd Year

  • Start with PYQs for ENT and Ophthalmology before the textbook. Both subjects have bounded question sets with a short list of high-frequency long essay topics. Two to three years of your university's papers for each subject tell you which conditions carry the most marks: in ENT, otitis media and epistaxis are almost universal; in Ophthalmology, cataract and glaucoma rarely miss a paper. Knowing these before you open a textbook shapes where you invest your reading time.
  • Treat the clinical examination component as a separate preparation track. ENT and Ophthalmology practical exams test clinical skills — instrument identification, examination technique, case history taking — that do not develop through theory reading alone. Begin orientating yourself to the clinical methods during the posting, not in the week before the practical exam.
  • Use PYQs to navigate Community Medicine, not the full textbook. Community Medicine has a very wide syllabus, but university paper analysis consistently shows that a relatively small subset of that syllabus generates most of the marks: epidemiological study designs, national health programme details, biostatistics applied to public health, and environmental and occupational health. Covering these areas thoroughly from PYQ-guided notes is more efficient than end-to-end textbook reading.
  • Do not treat Phase 3 Part 1 as a lighter year than Phase 2. The three subjects are fewer than Phase 2's four, and ENT and Ophthalmology are sometimes perceived as smaller clinical subjects. The practical assessment demands in both these subjects require preparation time that has no equivalent in Phase 2. Community Medicine has a genuinely large theory scope. Treat all three seriously from the start of the year.
  • Use the clinical posting period for ENT and Ophthalmology cases. Phase 3 clinical postings are when most students encounter ENT and Ophthalmology patients for the first time. Seeing a patient with otitis media, a case of cataract, or a glaucoma workup during the posting cements the clinical picture in a way that textbook descriptions cannot. This is one of the most efficient uses of posting time in MBBS.
  • Cross-reference Community Medicine infectious disease topics with Phase 2 Microbiology. Typhoid, malaria, dengue, and leprosy appear in Community Medicine papers from a public health and prevention angle, but the same conditions were covered in Phase 2 Microbiology. Sound Microbiology knowledge lets students answer Community Medicine questions on these conditions with better clinical and epidemiological detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many subjects are there in MBBS 3rd Year?

MBBS 3rd Year (Phase 3 Part 1) has three paper-bearing subjects under the NMC CBME curriculum: Community Medicine, ENT, and Ophthalmology. Each has a theory examination and a practical or clinical assessment component.

Is MBBS 3rd Year easier than 2nd Year?

Phase 3 Part 1 has three subjects compared to Phase 2's four, but the clinical assessment demands for ENT and Ophthalmology require preparation that has no direct equivalent in Phase 2. Community Medicine has a broad theoretical scope. Most students find the year different in character from Phase 2 rather than easier overall.

Are ENT and Ophthalmology theory-heavy in MBBS exams?

Both subjects have theory papers that follow predictable question patterns. ENT long essay questions consistently draw from otitis media, epistaxis, and cholesteatoma. Ophthalmology long essays consistently cover cataract, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. The challenge in both subjects is the clinical examination component, which requires active posting experience and instrument familiarity alongside theory preparation.

Where can I find MBBS 3rd Year question papers for my university?

Question papers for Community Medicine, ENT, and Ophthalmology are available for all seven GeckoMed universities in the tables above. Navigate to your university's row and click through to the listing page for your subject. Tier-1 universities have five paper years (2025 to 2021); non-Tier-1 universities have three paper years (2025 to 2023).
