Subject-Wise Overview

Community Medicine Syllabus

Community Medicine covers preventive and social medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health programmes in the Indian context. It bridges pre-clinical learning with population-level health, and includes fieldwork alongside classroom teaching. For the full topic breakdown, visit the Community Medicine hub, and for revision material, see Community Medicine Notes.

ENT Syllabus

ENT covers the diagnosis and management of ear, nose, and throat conditions, along with related head and neck anatomy and physiology. The practical component includes clinical examination techniques and instrument identification. Visit the ENT hub for the complete syllabus.

Ophthalmology Syllabus

Ophthalmology covers the anatomy, physiology, and clinical management of eye conditions, including common disorders such as cataract and glaucoma. The practical component includes ophthalmoscopy and clinical eye examination skills. See the Ophthalmology hub for full coverage, and Best Ophthalmology Book for MBBS for book recommendations.

Exam Pattern — MBBS 3rd Year

Under NMC CBME regulations, university examinations for Phase 3 Part 1 subjects follow the same standard national structure as Phase 1 and Phase 2 subjects: two theory papers of 100 marks each, plus a practical examination of 100 marks, for each of Community Medicine, ENT, and Ophthalmology.

To pass, a candidate is generally required to secure a minimum percentage separately in theory and in practicals, along with a minimum aggregate across both components, as prescribed by NMC regulations. Exact internal assessment weightage and local scheduling can vary by college, so students should confirm specifics with their institution.

For subject-wise question paper patterns and previous years' papers, see the 3rd Year Question Papers section below.

Internal Assessment

Internal assessment (IA) is conducted continuously through the academic year by the college or department, covering theory and practical performance, attendance, and participation in activities such as assignments, seminars, and case discussions. NMC regulations require a minimum of three internal assessments per topic through the year, along with minimum attendance thresholds to be eligible to sit university examinations. Internal marks are recorded but are not added into the final summative university exam score.
