Microbiology Exam Pattern at KUHS

Microbiology sits in Phase 2 (2nd Year) of the NMC CBME curriculum, alongside Pathology, Pharmacology, and Forensic Medicine. Under NMC CBME regulations, university exams for Phase 2 subjects (except Forensic Medicine and Toxicology) follow this structure:

  • Theory: Two papers of 100 marks each (200 marks total)
  • Practical and viva voce: One practical examination worth 100 marks, including viva
  • Total university exam marks: 300

Question types: Long-answer questions, short-answer questions, and MCQs in theory papers, with specimen and culture identification, staining technique demonstration, and viva voce in the practical.

Passing criteria (NMC CBME): A minimum of 50 percent marks in aggregate, with a required minimum percentage in Theory and Practical scored separately, and a minimum aggregate across both theory papers. Confirm the current exact threshold against the KUHS examination notification for your academic year, since NMC has revised this rule more than once since 2023.

This is the same national framework covered in more depth on the KUHS MBBS 2nd Year Syllabus page.

High-Yield Topics in KUHS Microbiology

A genuine "asked in N of the last 5 years" frequency table needs question-by-question analysis of the actual digitised papers, which is not yet available for KUHS Microbiology. Once the 2023 to 2025 papers are fully indexed, this section will carry real repeat-frequency data rather than an estimate.

In the meantime, based on standard NMC CBME 2nd Year Microbiology curriculum weightage, these topic areas are consistently high-yield across Indian university exams:

  • General bacteriology: morphology, growth, and sterilisation and disinfection methods
  • Immunology: antigen-antibody reactions, hypersensitivity, and vaccines
  • Systematic bacteriology: Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Mycobacterium, and Enterobacteriaceae
  • Virology: structure, classification, and medically important DNA and RNA viruses
  • Mycology: superficial and systemic fungal infections
  • Applied and hospital microbiology: nosocomial infections and antibiotic sensitivity testing

For a structured revision aid, see the microbiology culture media chart and antibiotic sensitivity chart.

How to Use These Papers

  • Start with the most recent year (2025) to see the current question style, then work backward
  • Time yourself against the actual paper duration once confirmed on each year page
  • Cross-check topics against the high-yield list above rather than reading every paper cover to cover
  • Follow up weak areas with Microbiology viva questions and Microbiology practical viva questions
  • Use the Microbiology mnemonics to lock in classification-heavy topics before your exam
