KNRUHS Pathology Exam Pattern

KNRUHS Pathology is a 100-mark theory paper examined in the Phase 2 (2nd Year) professional examination under the NMC CBME format. The paper duration is 3 hours. It is written alongside Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine in the 2nd Year professional examination.

The paper follows the NMC CBME structure of long essay questions (LEQ), short essay questions (SEQ), and short answer questions (SAQ). Pathology LEQs require both structural knowledge of the disease process and applied clinical correlation — a question on tuberculosis pathology may include Ghon complex morphology, spread, complications, and the histological distinction from other granulomas. SEQs cover discrete topics across general and systemic pathology. SAQs test specific morphological features, cell types, gross appearance, and histological findings. The specific mark allocation and question count are visible in the full papers above.

KNRUHS Pathology also has a separate practical examination covering gross specimen identification, histopathology slide identification, peripheral blood smear interpretation, and a viva component.

Study Tips for KNRUHS Pathology

General Pathology first — it underpins every systemic topic. Cell injury, inflammation, healing, haemodynamics, and neoplasia appear both as standalone LEQ topics and as the mechanistic foundation for every systemic disease. Students who revise general pathology well find that systemic pathology becomes a matter of applying the same mechanisms to specific organs. Spend the first two-thirds of your Pathology revision time here before moving to organ systems.

Granulomatous inflammation demands a comparison table. KNRUHS Pathology papers frequently ask for the differentiation between TB, leprosy, sarcoidosis, and Crohn's granulomas. Each has a distinct cellular composition, giant cell type, and caseation pattern. Revising these as a side-by-side comparison table — rather than reading each condition separately — produces answers that directly match the question format.

Histology slide identification follows a systematic sequence. In the Pathology practical, marks are awarded for correctly identifying the tissue, stating the pathological change, listing the diagnostic features, and naming the condition — in that order. Practise this sequence for the 10 to 15 most commonly identified slides (liver cirrhosis, granuloma, carcinoma, infarct, pneumonia). The pathology practical viva questions page covers the applied questions asked alongside each slide type.

Peripheral blood smear findings are high-yield SAQ material. KNRUHS Pathology short answer questions frequently ask for the peripheral smear appearance of specific conditions — microcytic hypochromic cells in iron deficiency, hypersegmented neutrophils in megaloblastic anaemia, target cells in thalassaemia, ring forms in malaria. Building a mental reference table of smear findings for the most common conditions covers a predictable block of marks.

Systemic pathology is best revised in organ clusters. Rather than revising by disease type across all organs, revise organ by organ — all cardiovascular pathology in one session, all respiratory in the next. This builds the organ-specific context that examiners expect in LEQ answers (for example, knowing that the left ventricle is the zone of coagulative necrosis in MI, not just that MI causes necrosis).

Connect Pathology revision to your clinical subjects early. Tuberculosis pathology, liver cirrhosis histology, and the pathology of myocardial infarction are all tested again in Final Year General Medicine and General Surgery written and viva exams. Building these connections in 2nd Year — rather than treating Pathology as a standalone subject — reduces revision load in Final Year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are KNRUHS Pathology question papers free to download on GeckoMed?

Yes. All KNRUHS Pathology question papers from 2021 to 2025 are free to view on the GeckoMed website. The GeckoMed app provides offline access and PDF download after a 4-day free trial, followed by an annual subscription.

Does the KNRUHS Pathology paper follow the NMC CBME format?

Yes. KNRUHS conducts Pathology examinations under the NMC Competency Based Medical Education framework. The paper includes long essay questions, short essay questions, and short answer questions covering general pathology and systemic pathology as per the Phase 2 CBME syllabus.

Is there a separate practical exam for KNRUHS Pathology?

Yes. The KNRUHS Pathology assessment includes a 100-mark theory paper and a separate practical examination. The practical covers gross specimen identification, histopathology slide identification, peripheral blood smear interpretation, and a viva. The pathology practical viva questions page covers the most commonly asked questions in the practical examination.

What is the most important topic in KNRUHS Pathology?

Based on analysis of KNRUHS Pathology papers from 2021 to 2025, the general pathology topics — necrosis types, granulomatous inflammation, acute inflammation, and neoplasia — are the most consistently tested as LEQs. Tuberculosis pathology, anaemia classification, and the peripheral blood smear are high-yield topics that appear across both theory and practical examinations.

Are KNRUHS Pathology papers useful for students at other universities?

Yes. The NMC CBME framework sets a common Pathology syllabus for all Indian medical universities. Topics recurring in KNRUHS papers — necrosis, granulomas, leukaemias, TB pathology — appear at RGUHS, TNMGRMU, and other universities. Students at other universities should also review their own university's papers alongside the KNRUHS archive.
