MGR University Physiology Exam Pattern

Physiology at TNMGRMU follows the NMC CBME assessment structure for Phase 1:

Component

Theory papers

What It Involves

Long essays, short notes and short answers across all physiology systems

Component

Practical

What It Involves

Haematology, clinical examination and experimental physiology exercises

Component

Viva voce

What It Involves

Oral questions on theory and practical topics

Component

Internal assessment

What It Involves

Continuous assessment by your college through the year

Question types to expect:

  1. Long essays: Mechanisms and regulation, often with a diagram or graph
  2. Short notes: Focused explanation of one concept
  3. Short answers: Definitions, normal values, lists and reasons
  4. Applied physiology: Clinical correlation of a normal mechanism

The exact marks split, number of papers and duration are set by TNMGRMU and may change between sessions. Always confirm with the official notification and the TNMGRMU exam dates page.

Important Physiology Questions to Practise

These questions reflect the style used in MGR University Physiology papers. They are not attributed to a specific year.

Long Essay Questions

  1. Describe the cardiac cycle with a labelled diagram of pressure and volume changes.
  2. Describe the mechanism of blood coagulation. Add a note on haemophilia.
  3. Describe the counter-current mechanism for concentration of urine.
  4. Describe the oxygen-haemoglobin dissociation curve and the factors that shift it.
  5. Describe the short-term and long-term regulation of arterial blood pressure.
  6. Describe neuromuscular transmission. Add a note on myasthenia gravis.
  7. Describe the pain pathway and the gate control theory of pain.
  8. Describe the synthesis, actions and regulation of thyroid hormones.

Short Notes

  1. Erythropoiesis
  2. Rh incompatibility
  3. Normal ECG
  4. Cardiac output and its regulation
  5. Glomerular filtration rate
  6. Juxtaglomerular apparatus
  7. Surfactant
  8. Types of hypoxia
  9. Mechanism of gastric HCl secretion
  10. Stretch reflex
  11. Functions of the cerebellum
  12. Functions of the hypothalamus
  13. Accommodation reflex
  14. Calcium homeostasis
  15. Actions of insulin
  16. Hormonal regulation of the menstrual cycle

Reasoning Questions

  1. Fetal haemoglobin has a higher affinity for oxygen. It binds 2,3-BPG poorly, which shifts its dissociation curve to the left.
  2. Hypoproteinaemia causes oedema. Low plasma protein lowers plasma oncotic pressure, so fluid moves out into the tissues.
  3. Rh incompatibility rarely affects the first pregnancy. The Rh-negative mother usually becomes sensitised only after exposure to fetal Rh-positive cells, often at delivery.
  4. Blood group O individuals are called universal red cell donors. Their red cells lack A and B antigens.

How to Study With MGR University Physiology Papers

  • Start with the latest paper. Attempt 2025 first, then work back through 2024, 2023 and 2021 to see how question framing has changed.
  • Practise graphs and diagrams. Cardiac cycle, ECG, oxygen-haemoglobin dissociation curve and action potential diagrams earn quick marks.
  • Revise applied physiology. CBME papers reward clinical correlation, such as linking coagulation to haemophilia.
  • Pair theory with practicals. Haematology and clinical examination topics also appear in viva, so revise them together using physiology practical viva questions.
  • Time every attempt. Use a minutes-per-mark plan from our guide on how to write answers in MBBS exams.
  • Finish with important questions on the TNMGRMU Physiology important questions page.
