What You Will Find in the Career Section

The career section is organised around the four phases of your MBBS under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum. Each guide is specific to where you are in the course, covering research windows, elective options, clinical posting strategies, and what experiences are realistically achievable at each stage.

Scope of this section:

  • What each MBBS phase demands and what it opens up for you
  • Research opportunities available during your MBBS
  • Elective and exchange programme options during the degree
  • How to use clinical postings beyond attendance compliance
  • Building a professional foundation before you complete your MBBS

This section does not cover NEET PG preparation, MD or MS residency applications, or any post-MBBS specialist route. GeckoMed is built for students in Years 1 to 4 and the career guidance reflects that.

Explore by phase:

Why Career Guidance Matters During Your MBBS

Most students come into MBBS with the goal of clearing exams, and that goal is right. University exams are the mandatory gate at every phase and nothing else happens if you do not pass them. But exams and career building are not mutually exclusive, and MBBS is long enough that the students who come out ahead are typically the ones who did both at the same time, not sequentially.

The bigger problem is that most career guidance written for doctors targets working clinicians or postgraduates. There is very little practical India-specific guidance written for a 1st or 2nd Year student who has university practical exams, clinical postings, and family expectations all running in parallel. Generic advice like "publish research" or "do an elective" rarely accounts for what is actually feasible at Phase 1 or Phase 2 of the NMC CBME curriculum.

This section exists to close that gap. The content is reviewed by subject matter experts who have completed the NMC curriculum and understand how MBBS time actually works. Every recommendation maps to a specific phase, is achievable within normal college constraints, and does not require resources beyond what most students in an NMC-affiliated college in India have access to.

One programme worth knowing early: the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Short-Term Studentship (STS) is a competitive grant open to MBBS students in their 2nd or 3rd year. It funds a short supervised research project at an approved institution. Applications open annually. It is one of the most widely recognised research credentials an MBBS student can hold, and preparing for it is a concrete, phase-specific goal that does not conflict with your exam preparation if you plan for it properly.

The career section will continue to grow with phase-specific guides, research application walkthroughs, and elective guidance as each piece is reviewed and approved.

How to Use the Career Section

  • Start with your current phase. The year hub for 1st Year, 2nd Year, 3rd Year, and Final Year each explains what that phase demands academically and what it opens up for you in terms of career activity. Read your current phase first.
  • Keep exams sorted before adding anything else. Research opportunities, elective enquiries, and extracurriculars are worth pursuing, but they come after your PYQ revision and internal assessment preparation, not instead of it. GeckoMed has previous year question papers and notes to help keep exams on track.
  • Pick one or two areas of focus, not ten. Clinical exposure, research, electives, and medical society involvement all have genuine value. Trying to pursue all of them simultaneously across an already demanding curriculum produces scattered effort. Identify one focus per phase and do it properly.
  • Use clinical postings with intention. Phase 3 postings in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBG), and Paediatrics are your primary opportunity to develop clinical judgement and build professional relationships. Treat them as active learning, not as attendance obligations you need to tick off.
  • Verify what your college allows. Research projects, leave for electives, and external attachments all require college administration approval. The ICMR STS, for example, requires your institution's support before you can apply. Confirm the process at your college before making any commitments.
