In India, admission to any MBBS programme happens through one exam: NEET-UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Whether you are still preparing for it or already through it and starting 1st Year, understanding the entrance exam format helps put your own MBBS journey in context. This guide breaks down the NEET-UG pattern, subject-wise weightage, and sample question styles across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

The sample questions in this guide are illustrative of the exam pattern and difficulty level. They are not reproduced from any official NEET paper.

Sample NEET-Style Questions by Subject

The questions below illustrate the style, format, and difficulty level typically seen in NEET-UG. They are original practice-style questions, not reproductions of any official paper.

Physics: Sample Questions

  1. A body is projected at an angle such that its horizontal range equals three times its maximum height. What is the angle of projection?
  2. Two resistors of 4 ohm and 6 ohm are connected in parallel. What is their equivalent resistance?
  3. The SI unit of magnetic flux is: a) Weber b) Tesla c) Henry d) Gauss

Chemistry: Sample Questions

  1. Which of the following has the highest boiling point? a) Methane b) Ethane c) Ethanol d) Ethene
  2. The hybridisation of carbon in benzene is: a) sp b) sp2 c) sp3 d) sp3d
  3. Which functional group is present in aldehydes?

Biology: Sample Questions

  1. Which of the following is the site of light-independent reactions in photosynthesis? a) Thylakoid membrane b) Stroma c) Outer chloroplast membrane d) Cytoplasm
  2. The functional unit of the kidney is: a) Neuron b) Nephron c) Alveolus d) Villus
  3. Which phase of the cell cycle is associated with DNA replication?

How to Prepare Subject by Subject

  1. Build NCERT fundamentals first. NEET questions are drawn heavily from concepts covered in the NCERT syllabus for Classes 11 and 12, so a strong grasp of NCERT content is the foundation for every subject.
  2. Prioritise Biology, but do not neglect Physics and Chemistry. Biology carries half the marks, but a weak Physics or Chemistry score can still hold back your overall rank.
  3. Practise with timed mock tests. With 180 questions in 3 hours, speed and accuracy both matter. Regular timed practice builds exam-day pacing.
  4. Revise diagrams and NCERT line-by-line for Biology. Many Biology questions are drawn directly from NCERT diagrams, tables, and specific textbook lines.
  5. Work through numerical problem sets for Physics and Chemistry. Conceptual clarity alone is not enough; regular numerical practice builds calculation speed.
  6. Track your negative marking impact. Since incorrect answers cost -1 mark, avoid random guessing on questions you are genuinely unsure about.

Common Question Formats You Will See

Format

What It Tests

Example Style

Direct recall

Straightforward factual knowledge

"The SI unit of X is..."

Assertion-Reason

Whether you understand cause-effect logic, not just facts

"Assertion: ... Reason: ... Choose the correct option."

Numerical/Calculation

Application of formulas

"Calculate the equivalent resistance of..."

Diagram-based

Identification from a labelled or unlabelled diagram

"Identify the structure marked X in the given diagram."

Match the following

Linking two related lists correctly

"Match Column I with Column II."

After NEET: What Changes Once You Start MBBS

Once you clear NEET-UG and begin 1st Year MBBS, your exam preparation shifts entirely. University exams test the MBBS curriculum itself, Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry in 1st Year, rather than the NEET syllabus. This is where GeckoMed comes in: previous year question papers, syllabus breakdowns, notes, and viva prep for your specific university, from 1st Year through Final Year.
